WATERTOWN RED WINS 10-5! Practice Tuesday.
by posted 09/19/2021

Hey there baseball fans!

Thanks to all parents who came out to support us on Sunday for a 10-5 victory by WATERTOWN RED over Belmont!

The boys wasted no time getting started today, as new leadoff hitter Jake Mosca roped a double to get us going!  That was followed by a Justin Griffin walk and good contact by Morgen Brock to move his teammates over.  Gunnar Melling followed with a single that scored two!  Griffin Parker followed with a single and took second on a momentary lapse from Belmont...and the ball got away - - so Griffin was off to the races!!!! Griff rounded third and headed home scoring on the play!!!  Great awareness and hustle had his teammates going crazy.  We ended up plating 4-0 as Justin took the hill.  Justin worked two solid innings on the mound giving up no runs and striking out four.  EXCELLENT DEFENSE held Belmont to no runs in the first after two very solid hits by Belmont.  Gabe Sarofian made two expert putouts from second base and Leo Orifice made a rocket of a throw from left field to keep Belmont runners from scoring.

Top of the second started with a very patient walk by Ethan Antipov.  Two batters later Justin connected on an absolute smash to DEEP, DEEP left-center field!!!  The fence in Belmont is waaaaaay out there - and so was the ball.  Ethan scored and Justin just kept going and ended up touching all four for a HOME RUN.  6-0, RED leads.

We hit some bumps in the bottom of the third as Belmont ended up scoring 5 runs on us and batted around.  RED battled through the adversity and after some adjustments were made in the field, we got out of a scary inning with the lead, 6-5.

Gabe gave us a strong 4th inning, fighting off a few walks with three strikeouts to preserve the lead.  Moving along to the 5th inning, we were the beneficiary of a bunch of walks as RED patiently took their bases as we added four to the lead.  10-5.  As the umpire warned us that the 5th would be the final inning - the bell tolled and Gunnar took the mound to close up business.  He sure made it look easy...  With lightning speed and pinpoint accuracy, Gunnar blew away three straight hitters to secure the win for WATERTOWN RED!

We have practice once again at 5pm on Tuesday.  We'll aim to wrap at 6:30 to get your boys home!

Have a great week everyone!

RED Raiders WIN! Practice on Tuesday @ 5pm.
by posted 09/13/2021

Good Morning, Baseball Fans!!!

Congratulations to the Watertown RED Raiders as they beat their crosstown rivals in the FallBall Opener, by a score of 11-5.  The Watertown Black squad put up two runs early, highlighted by a left field bomb by John Pace.  RED stayed composed and kept the pressure on by scoring 11 runs over the next four innings.  Before the game we talked about winning with Defense and Awareness...and our boys did not disappoint.

At the plate the Raiders were patient, made contact on good pitches and worked walks to keep the pressure on.  Baserunning was excellent highlighted by Morgen Brock's awareness on the bases and hustle by speedy Luca DeFrancesco (3 runs scored).  Gunnar Melling led the way with the bat producing a 3-hit game.  Both Gunnar and Morgen excelled with runners on base, knocking in two runs a piece.

On defense we were mostly solid.  We limited throwing the ball around and did a great job backing each other up.  Kudos to our 9-year olds (Jake Mosca, Leo Orifice and Luca) who caught all six innings and did a good job keeping the ball in front of them.  There were a few things to tighten up - but very solid for the first game.

The pitching was tremendous on Sunday as Justin Griffin, Jake, Leo and Gunnar combined for 14 strikeouts and only 3 hits over 6 innings.  Our pitchers did what they needed to do - keep the ball around the plate, stay composed and battle through adversity.

All in all a very impressive first go for Watertown RED!

We've scheduled a practice at 5pm on Tuesday at Bemis to keep working on our game.  Practice will wrap promptly at 6:30pm.

Next Sunday we travel to Belmont (Grove Street) next week for another 3pm game.  Please arrive no later than 2:30pm and let us know in advance if your player cannot make the game.

Thanks to all and have a great week!

Best,

~Coach Doug
